Half-Face Drawing: Nikola Tesla
Nikola Tesla was a brilliant inventor, creating such things as the Tesla Coil, which would later revolutionize electronics, and the Tesla Turbine, and ultra-efficient way of using compressed air or wind to power a rotating shaft. He worked with all of the physical laws of electromagnetics and kinematics at his disposal in astoundingly creative ways. He wasn't afraid to perform crazy experiments, and many times got far more than he had bargained for. More than that, though, he loved what he did, and he didn't care what others thought of that. Nikola Tesla died in relative obscurity as an inventor, but he stayed on the same path of creative inventing all his life despite his obscurity. Nikola Tesla's creativity and ability to come up with incredibly useful ideas inspires me, but his tenacity with regards to doing what he loved inspires me even more.
The above is the artist statement for my half-face drawing of Nikola Tesla. Half-face drawing is a technique in which one prints out half of the subject's face and draws the other half, giving the artist some reference for the normally-difficult task of drawing a human face. This activity was practice in this technique, with an emphasis on selecting people who were inspirations for us. I selected Nikola Tesla as my inspirational person because he gets much less historical credit than he is due for his many brilliant inventions.
