My Name, My Story Project

The video above is my final product for this project. The project was intended as an introduction to digital storytelling techniques, including shot composition in photographs and video, narration, and introspection (not a video technique, but important to telling a meaningful story). This was an individual project; the final product was a video detailing a struggle that the individual had in his/her life and how he/she had overcome that struggle, if he/she had. The end result should have been a meaningful video that described something central to each individual; some were serious and some were just fun, depending on the nature of the individual and his/her struggle.
I chose to make my video more on the serious side. I consider myself to have a very privileged and generally happy life, so I was hard-pressed at first to come up with a meaningful idea. I finally thought of the idea to talk about an issue that I had had a while ago: I was very shy when I was younger. Upon giving the idea more thought, I realized that I hadn't just grown out of the issue; something very specific in my life, joining boy scouts, helped me become more extroverted. This actually worked out really well, since my troop has a Flickr account with hundreds of pictures from various activities and outings, and I was able to use several of those in my video. Thus, I made my video about my shyness and how boy scouts helped me to grow out of that problem, starting with my elementary school years and ending with my achievement of the Eagle rank on March 15th, 2015. Over the course of the project, through introspection, I realized something else: I still have that problem at school. I thus finished my video by describing how I am still introverted at school and elsewhere, but how I am almost like a different person during scout activities and outings.
