Periodic-als Project
As one might imagine from the pun in the title, the Periodic-als Project, was a project about elements. Each person had to choose one element, one molecule (any molecule), one ionic compound, and one covalent compound to study. There was some research about historical scientists and current scientific research thrown in as well; each person had to study one scientist selected from a list and one topic in which current research is being done, not necessarily in the realm of Chemistry. Also true to the title, for this project we worked in groups to make periodicals that essentially compiled the individual work of each group member into one big final product.
Each person contributed to a classified ads section, a scientist interview section, a local person of interest section, a personal ads section, a comics section, and a world science report section. Each person was required to create one product for each section with the exception of the classified ads section; each person was required to create three classified ads. The classified ads were based on the various elements each group member chose to study, and were required to include a minimum number of facts about that element; each ad had to include different information from the other two. Other than that, the assignment was fairly open-ended. The scientist interview was, as one might imagine, a list of at least ten interview questions for the scientist that a student researched, and responses from that scientist (written by the student, of course, but made to sound as though they came from the scientist). The local person of interest profile was about the molecule that each student researched. It had to include a minimum number of facts about that molecule, and it had to portray that molecule as though it was a famous athlete, celebrity, humanitarian, etc. Each student had options when it came to the personal ads; he/she could write a personal ad, love letter, or missed connection article. These pieces were about the ionic compounds, made to sound as though they were written from one ion to the other. The comics were about the covalent compounds, and were also fairly open-ended; they just needed to have a certain amount of information in them. Finally, the world science report was an article on each student's current science topic; this was a straightforward research article.
